CEOS DATA BASE

The CEOS Data Base is available in two forms:

CEOS HANDBOOK

The CEOS Handbook is published every five years on average. It is an up-to-date handbook describing the status of technology and services related to space-based Earth observation. Application examples are highlighting the current trends and achievements of space systems to provide user-driven information services. A comprehensive list of Earth observation satellite sensors and missions, both current and planned, complements the report. The last report was published in 2002. Copies can be obtained from the CEOS Secretariat or ESA, or click here.

CEOS DISASTER MANAGEMENT SUPPORT

CEOS encourages natural and technological disaster management on a worldwide basis by fostering improved utilization of existing and planned Earth observation satellite data. CEOS has produced a Report that contains a detailed assessment of the state-of-the-practice and areas in need of improvement in the application of satellite data to selected hazard areas--drought, earthquake, fire, flood, ice, landslide, oil spill, and volcanic hazards. The Report includes disaster scenarios intended to serve as guidelines for identifying appropriate satellite data and products to support emergencies, and specifically, to assist the Parties to the International Charter for Major Disasters with scenario definition. The intent of the scenarios is to describe in advance, the satellite data and products that would be useful under specific disaster circumstances. This is meant to offer a standard procedure to use when the emergency on-call officer and project manager make requests for data and services for a specific disaster. Taken together, the scenarios would comprise a handbook of what to do when each type of disaster occurs. The Report emphasizes the need of space agencies, international and regional organizations, and commercial organizations to work closely on the implementation of the Report's recommendations. The Report contributes to the work of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) in pursuit of decisions taken at UNISPACE III and the United Nations International Strategy on Disaster Reduction (ISDR). In addition to this Report, CEOS developed an information tool that demonstrates timely access to satellite-derived data and information products (i.e., "one stop shopping") to support various facets of disaster management. The Report and tool can be viewed here.

CD-ROM: Resources in Earth Observation: Case Studies, Data, and Information for Schools and Developing Countries

The CD-ROM is designed for use primarily by developing countries and educators. The goals of the CD-ROM are 1) to help meet unsatisfied needs in developing countries for information about Earth observation applications, data sources, and future plans; 2) to help teachers and students around the world learn through observations from space; 3) to strengthen worldwide understanding of the social benefits of Earth observation by satellites and of the efforts of international organizations such as CEOS, which attempt to make these benefits both widespread and equitably shared. Copies can be obtained from the CEOS Secretariat or online.

CD-ROM: Changing the Face of the Earth—An EO Treatise

The CD-ROM studies and profiles projects demonstrating the value of EO satellite data as an information source for projects on different geological scales and time scales. Copies can be obtained from ISRO.

CEOS Contribution to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems

CEOS is a contributor to the efforts to develop a Global Earth Observation System of Systems.  In addition to sending representatives to the Group on Earth Observation Summit in South Africa in November 2007, CEOS has developed "Virtual Constellations" to address emerging data gaps, avoid overlap among observing systems, and make maximum use of existing assets.  Attached is a publication outlining the contributions of the Virtual Constellations to GEOSS.
